Coffee With Kelley
As a candidate for The Ohio House, I am working hard to win this race. Not by campaigning to lobby groups and big donors, but by listening to people like you. Every day, I am out and about meeting new people, hearing their stories, seeing how folks live and work, here in our little corner of Ohio.
We have over 160,000 people in Delaware County, and since I can't possibly knock on every door, (though sometimes I think I'm close) I am pleased to announce that I will host regular "coffee with Kelley" meetings as a way for us to stay in touch.
Please join me for a hot Cup-O-Joe, some friendly conversation, and a chance to peruse a copy of my new book; MOM for THE HOUSE, Your Essential Guide to Housekeeping and Politics, by Kelley Wenzlaff and Maura Manning.
I will host these coffee talks all around the county, at the Libraries and local gathering spots of each precinct.
To get in on the conversation and fun, just call ahead, tell us what neck of the woods you're in, and we'll hook you up with the inside scoop on the upcoming schedule and locations.
MOM for the HOUSE!
I'm calling my run "The MOM for The House" campaign; because I want folk's to realize what happens in "The House" has a direct effect on what happens in our homes. When elected, I will vote on issues by asking: How will this legislation affect our families?
When we talk about jobs, or the environment, education, healthcare or the economy, we need to remember all of these issues affect our quality of life at home. Sometimes that concept gets overlooked at the Statehouse. All too often, partisanship takes precedence over people.
A NATION UNITED
We need to start thinking of our nation as a family. That's the attitude that will make our nation strong. Some of you may remember not long ago when a sharp reporter asked Rudy Giuliani to "name one thing that happened on 9-12." Rudy was caught off guard when he replied "Well, it was one day after 9-11." As I watched that moment on the news I could barley stay in my seat. I knew the answer. I knew it right away. On 9-12 we were a nation UNITED! Not a single peep of partisanship was heard from coast to coast. On that day, we were a family. And that folks is exactly what this country needs.
I'm not a politician and I won't ever act like one. I will not vote on any issue based on how it will "make me look in the polls", or if it will "position me for higher office," or if it will put me in "favor" with the big money donors and powerful lobby groups. That's called playing politics. As voters we see this all the time. We look at the field of candidates, and often want to choose "NONE OF THE ABOVE" because we know the candidates do not have our interests at heart. Quite the contrary. They have their own self interest at heart.
Our government is supposed to be OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE, not of the politicians, by the lobbyists, and for big business. It's supposed to be the one shining ideal that makes our nation great. But folks, we need to remember...we get the government we deserve. Democracy only works when the people make it work, and that means ALL of us. As voters we need to be involved. We need to stay informed. If we don't do that, we have no right to complain when things don't go our way. We need to engage in the process, and make sure we elect leaders who will put the needs of the community ahead of their own ambition.
PUBLIC SERVICE
I have a long history of public service. I volunteer in the schools, do conservation work, teach classes to train low income individuals for better jobs, and speak publicly on issues of wellness and preventative healthcare. I am a college graduate, and am proud to say I paid my own way though school as an adult non-traditional student while working full time AND caring for my family.
BUSINESS EXPERIENCE
I spent twenty years as the owner of a small printing company. During those years, the people of our community would come to me, with their life savings in hand, bravely risking it all to embark on the Great American Dream of starting their own business. I was there for them when they had their grand openings, I was there every time they had a special or a sale, and sadly, I was there, printing their going out of business signs when the dream failed. I have seen it happen over and over again. It breaks my heart every single time. Close to sixty percent of Ohio's small businesses fail within the first three years, and I can tell you it is not because these people didn't try.
As your representative, I will make it my mission to provide a strong foundation of support for the small businesses in our state.
EDUCATION
I am also a strong advocate for education. There are so many issues surrounding our schools which need to be addressed. Funding through property taxes is a major issue. We need to look for other, better models of funding that will be fair to the tax payers, while providing equal opportunity for students who do not live in wealthy districts.
ISSUES I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT
In addition to my commitment to the business community and the schools, I am also very passionate about healthcare, the economy, women's issues, civil rights, and nature conservation. We need quality affordable healthcare, low cost prescription drugs, and access to integrated /alternative /preventative care. We face tough times ahead with our economy, and must demand more fiscal restraint and effectiveness from our tax dollars than ever before. We must protect a women's right to choose. We must demand equal rights for ALL citizens, and it is critical we adopt eco-sustainable policies for future generations.
WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP
Last year I went to The John Glenn School of Public Affairs to hear the senator speak during the Barbara K. Fergus Women in Leadership program. The event featured Marie Wilson of The White House Project. Marie pointed out less than 15% of our elected officials in the Ohio Legislature are women. 15%!!!
I had no idea there was such a lack of women's perspective in our government! Wilson urged each and every member of the audience to find the courage to run for office. She explained that women's concerns are not heeded in government because there are not enough women in government working to promote the issues we care about.
So, moved by Senator Glenn's eloquence and cheered on by Ms. Wilson, I have searched my soul, talked to my family, and made the life altering decision to throw my hat in the ring! In early January of 2007, I marched on down to the Ohio Board of Elections and registered my intention to run for office.
This Mom is running for the House!

he inspires us all to reach for the stars."
